Research on growth of moong and fenugreek seeds and diabetes, these big experiments will be done in space in Shubhanshu Shukla’s Axiom-4 mission
In another experiment, they will study the growth of edible algae in microgravity. This has been designed by the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and its objective is to find out whether microalgae can be used as a food source during future space travels. Similarly, by observing the growth of seeds like moong and fenugreek, it will also be determined whether food can be grown in space.
An important experiment related to diabetes.
Another experiment by ISRO will be conducted to understand the effect of space travel on six types of crop seeds. This will help in selecting suitable seeds for future space missions. Meanwhile, an ICGEB experiment will investigate how two types of cyanobacteria develop in space with different nutrient sources like urea and nitrate.
This mission will also include a very special experiment related to diabetes, named Suite Ride. Until now, insulin-dependent diabetic people are not considered suitable for space travel, as controlling blood sugar in space is difficult.
In this experiment, astronauts will wear Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM), allowing their sugar levels to be monitored live from Earth. The goal of this research is to send diabetic people to space in the future. Additionally, it can provide new insights into the care of bedridden patients on Earth for long periods.
Shubhanshu Shukla, a ‘Technology Genius’
Shubhanshu Shukla is the pilot of this mission, and his responsibilities will cover launch, insertion into spacecraft orbit, docking with the International Space Station, return, and landing. He has also been trained in the manual control of the Crew Dragon capsule so that he can take control in case of a technical glitch.
His fellow astronauts call him a ‘Technology Genius’. NASA’s experienced astronaut Peggy Whitson said that she feels very safe having Shubhanshu as her co-pilot. Astronauts from Poland and Hungary participating in the mission also highly praised Shubhanshu’s sharp mind, experience, and decision-making ability.
Who is Shubhanshu Shukla?
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a resident of Lucknow, studied at City Montessori School in Aliganj. Joining the Indian Air Force in 2006, Shukla has built a significant career as a fighter pilot with over 2,000 flying hours and more than 16 years of service.
Shubhanshu’s nickname is “Gunjan.” He is the youngest of three siblings and the first person in his family to join the armed forces. His aviation career includes flying various aircraft, including the Su-30MKI, MIG-21, MIG-29, Jaguar, and Hawk. He is a qualified Fighter Combat Leader and a respected Test Pilot.
Selected under ISRO’s Human Spaceflight Programme (HSP), Shukla is also a top contender for the future Gaganyaan mission. He has been training with NASA and AXIOM Space for the past eight months.
By flying into space today, Shukla has become the first Indian astronaut to go into space after four decades. Before this, Rakesh Sharma made a historic flight in 1984 aboard the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft.
