Caitlyn welcomed Brody with her second ex-wife, Thompson, 75. The former couple, who were married from 1981 to 1986, also share son Brandon Jenner.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians alum also shares son Burt Jenner and daughter Cassandra Marino with her first wife, Chrystie Scott. The exes tied the knot in 1972, and their divorce was finalized in 1981.

Caitlyn and Kris, 69, married in 1991, but the reality star filed for divorce in September 2014, 11 months after the longtime couple announced their separation. Their divorce was finalized in 2015.

Brody’s relationship with Caitlyn has been complicated over the years. He admitted on a 2013 episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians that Caitlyn “wasn’t a great father to me” and “was never around.”

In 2018, the reality television star told PEOPLE that it was a “big disappointment” not having Caitlyn at his wedding to Carter. On an episode of The Hills: New Beginnings the following year, Brody echoed this hurt, saying, “Not having my dad at the wedding, it was a bummer. Honestly, it really did hurt and I would have loved to have had her there.”

Luckily, the pair has worked to rebuild their relationship. On the Jan. 15 episode of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, Brody revealed that he received a “sincere apology” from Caitlyn.

“It was the first time in my life that I’ve ever gotten an apology,” he said. “You know, I’m sorry for not being there, and honestly, it meant a lot.”

At the time, a rep for Caitlyn told PEOPLE: “Caitlyn has a positive relationship with Brody and Tia.”

Speaking exclusively with PEOPLE in January, Brody said that he and Caitlyn have a “great relationship now,” adding that “in a lot of ways she did me a favor by not being around that much when I was growing up” as it made him want to be even more present for his own daughter, Honey, whom he welcomed with Blanco in July 2023.

“I look at it as a positive,” he explained. “Yeah, she wasn’t around for me growing up that much. I still saw her sometimes, she wasn’t completely absent, but I still say I definitely am going to be much more present as a father, and it taught me to be that, so I’m grateful for it.”

On mending his relationship with Caitlyn through the years, Brody added that he’s learned to accept that “life’s too short to hold grudges and to focus on the negative.”

“There’s so many positive things about life and about relationships, and there’s so many good things that you can focus on,” he said. “It only does damage to yourself the more you focus on negative stuff. I think that our relationship over time is I just kind of let things go.”

“She apologized to me since then and we’ve talked, we’ve hashed it out, and she’s regretful of not being there growing up, and I forgive her for that,” he continued of Caitlyn. “I totally forgive her and I understand. I understand that she was going through a lot of stuff as well. None of us are perfect, and she had a lot of things that she was dealing with. You just have to just let those things go and move forward. There’s so many beautiful things in life, why hold grudges?”
