Now US visa entry will be decided through social media, know the new rule
If you want to go to America for studies, training or any other work, then now only passport, interview and documents will not be enough. Under the new US visa policy, it will now be mandatory for you to make the privacy settings of your social media accounts ‘public’. The US government has implemented this new rule for non-immigrant visa applicants of F, M and J categories, which will come into effect immediately.
The purpose of this change is to check the identity of the applicants and their eligibility to enter the US through their digital activities. Earlier this condition was applicable only on student visa (F1), but now every applicant will have to follow this rule.
This step has been taken with the aim of ensuring the national security of America, so that the possibility of entry through suspicious or false identity can be prevented. So if you are planning to go to America, then from now on social media has also become an important part of your visa application.
The US Embassy said in a post on X (formerly Twitter),
“Every visa decision is a national security decision. Therefore, applicants are required to set the privacy settings of all their personal social media accounts to ‘public’ to facilitate verification of their identity and legitimacy in the US.”
Which visa categories will this rule apply to?
This rule specifically applies to
F visa: Students pursuing academic studies
M visa: Students pursuing professional/technical courses
J visa: People participating in exchange visitor programs such as internships, research, etc.
US Visa: Impact on Indian students
Every year, millions of students from India go to the US on F and J visas. With this decision, they will now have to put all their social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. on public mode, so that they can be screened. This decision may raise concerns about privacy for many people, but it will be a mandatory part of the visa application process.
